I think there were multiple attempts at making The Mask movie a horror or comedy/horror, but in the end they just couldn't make it work. I think they went through about four scripts before they decided to scrap it and go for the hero idea.

I was kind of annoyed that the movie played down the Mask's psychotic tendencies and his penchant for extreme violence.
But Jim Carrey was absolutely perfect the comedy they tuned it into.
